Understanding the Menstrual Cycle

The menstrual cycle is a natural monthly process that prepares a woman’s body for a possible pregnancy. It usually begins during early adolescence, most often between the ages of 12 and 15, and continues until menopause, which typically occurs around 50–52 years of age. A cycle is measured from the first day of one period to the first day of the next. Hormones regulate every stage of this cycle, and its length can vary from woman to woman. A regular cycle is usually defined as one where the difference between the shortest and longest cycles is less than 8 days. On average, cycles last about 28 days, though anything between 21–35 days can be normal.

During each cycle:

If the egg is not fertilized, the body sheds the uterine lining, resulting in menstruation, and the cycle starts again.

What Is a Period?

A period, also known as menstruation, refers to the vaginal bleeding that marks the beginning of each cycle. It involves the discharge of blood and uterine tissue and typically lasts between 2 and 7 days.

pan style="font-weight: 400;">Periods happen when the egg from the previous cycle remains unfertilized. This bleeding phase stops during pregnancy, and in most cases, does not return until after the early months of breastfeeding. Eventually, menstrual cycles come to a permanent end with menopause, which is defined as going 12 consecutive months without bleeding.

How the Period Calculator Works

The Period Calculator provides a visual calendar that highlights two key sets of days:

By tracking these phases, the calculator can help with both family planning and cycle awareness, making it easier for women to understand and anticipate the rhythms of their reproductive health.
